Cuando la arqueología llega al rescate del turismo: el caso de Bocana del Rio Copalita, Huatulco, Oaxaca, México

Abstract: This paper focuses on the difficult relation between tourism and national heritage. Tourism faces a strong competition which compels this industry to offer a cultural bonus to keep up with high level international offers in order to personalize the different stays. It offers sun, sand and cultural exotics. Culture, therefore, turns into merchandising. How to find a balance between respect for culture and economic needs? How to get a reasonable equilibrium between identity and commodity cultures avoiding that the last one become more valuable in detriment of identity? We expose here the case of the eco‑archeological park of Bocana del Rio, Huatulco (Oaxaca) in charge of two different federal entities, the Found for National Tourism and the National Institute of Anthropology and History.

Resumen: Este artículo trata de la difícil relación entre turismo y patrimonio material e inmaterial. El turismo en México enfrenta una fuerte competencia que le obliga a ofrecer un plus cultural para seguir competitivo a nivel internacional y poder así personalizar las estadías vacacionales. Se ofrece sol, playa y exotismo cultural. La cultura, por lo tanto, se vuelve mercancía. ¿Cómo conciliar el respeto por la cultura y la necesidad económica? ¿Cómo lograr un equilibrio razonable entre la cultura identitaria y la cultura mercancía sin que una se valorice en forma excluyente en detrimento de la otra? Exponemos aquí el caso del Parque eco‑arqueológico de Bocana del Río, Huatulco (Oaxaca‑México) a cargo de dos entidades federales diferentes: el Fondo Nacional para el Turismo y el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia.
