Patrimonio cultural y turismo en el México posrevolucionario

This article discusses the beginning of the relationship between cultural heritage and tourism in the plans and programs of government in Mexico during the first decades of the twentieth century. Starting from the premise that in the current programs of cultural tourism in the country underlying concepts and practices that date back to that time, the study of this issue with a long-term perspective makes it possible to understand the origin and evolution of this relationship. This knowledge can help overcome disputes about the economic use of cultural property, in particular to reassess the social significance that had originally Mexican state intervention in promoting tourism from its rich cultural heritage.

Resumen: En este trabajo se aborda el inicio de la relación entre el patrimonio cultural y el turismo en los planes y programas de gobierno en México durante las primeras décadas del siglo XX. Partiendo de la premisa de que en los actuales programas de turismo cultural en este país subyacen conceptos y prácticas que se remontan a esa etapa, el estudio del tema con una perspectiva de largo plazo permitirá comprender el origen y evolución de la relación entre patrimonio cultural y turismo. Ese conocimiento que puede contribuir a superar las controversias en torno al actual aprovechamiento económico de los bienes culturales, en particular al revalorar el sentido social que tuvo en su origen la intervención del Estado mexicano en el fomento de la actividad turística a partir de su rico legado cultural.
